These are ‘modern’ haiku, though Fred has written more traditional haiku. A volume of formal haiku is currently in preparation. By traditional haiku is meant haiku which follows the formal rules determined for haiku in English such as 5 syllables in the first line, 7 in the second and 5 in the third. But haiku in the 20th century as undergone changes and is freer. These poems show the combination of delicacy and intensity which at the heart of haiku and of Fred Charap’s work.
Again we have Silvano Ferrone’s extremely beautiful translations which are so fateful to the heart and soul of this poetry.
